Episode 67 - Story Points Demystified!

What are story points?
Why would we use them?
How do we pick a unit?
Can I make my teams all use the same numbers?
How do we get started?

We answer all of these and more as we dig into the hotly debated world of story points.  Like user stories, story points are often talked about, but seldom clarified.  Our goal with this podcast is to give you the tools you need to make story points useful in your organization.

Please let us know how you use story points in the comment section.

  1. This is some good stuff.

On the note of minimum/maximum story sizes, it seems that "7" is the magic number for a range size; the human brain can't keep more than 7 options in play at once without concentration. Thus, .5-13, 7 options, would lend itself to a good range.

Another factor in favor of the smallest 7 elements of the Fibonacci sequence is the close proximity in the elements. It is easier for my brain to see the difference between a 1 and a 3 than a 10 and a 40 even though both amounts are really just placeholders.

Finally, I think that Fibonacci can be better than shirt sizes or drink sizes because of its technical novelty--it invokes the technical imagination because Fibonacci is rarely used in most day-to-day life. If that sounds too geeky... maybe it is...
